Phonics
Phonics plays an integral part of our curriculum, ensuring all children in EYFS and KS1 are taught to read as soon as possible. The Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised scheme supports children in recognising all 44 phonemes in the English alphabetical code and are taught how to blend these sounds in order to read alternative graphemes. We ensure that these lessons begin as soon as children enter Nursery. Taking a huge priority, phonics is taught for thirty minutes each day with additional interventions for children in the lowest 20% of their cohort.
Children are expected to complete Foundation in Phonics in Nursery, Phases 2, 3 and 4 in Reception, Phase 5 in Year 1 and a Spelling Scheme in Year 2, where they will finish the programme.
Throughout the year we complete half-termly assessments to ensure children are placed in the correct groups and are steadily progressing.

Reading
Teaching children the love of reading is crucial at Villiers and we take great pride in offering ample opportunities to help develop this positive attitude. A variety of texts are on offer in English lessons and pleasure for reading sessions to ensure children are engaged and eager to read a variety of texts with the intention of developing confident and fluent readers for their future. We incorporate a range of books that tackle diversity, with authors and characters from a range of ethnic backgrounds.
To further increase their love of reading, we offer an array of initiatives across school to connect them to texts and enjoy the experience. Reading for Pleasure days are offered once a term where children are encouraged to attend school in comfortable attire and bring their favourite book from home, they are also given opportunities in the day to complete activities linking to the book and become engrossed in the text. We also celebrate World Book Day and Roald Dahl Day where children can come to school dressed as book characters. Book fair visits us once or twice a year, allowing children to access and purchase a collection of books. We also endeavour to get as many authors into school as possible to read their stories to our children, hoping to spark future aspirations.
Each classroom is equipped with an appealing thematic reading corner that links with a year group’s topic, this space is encouraged for children to use at different times of the day, again inspiring reading for pleasure. Reading competitions are encouraged throughout the year, such as our ‘Book Bingo’ initiative which is differentiated for KS1 and KS2, which inspires children to read fiction, non-fiction and poetry of different themes. 'Starbooks' is an additional incentive to encourage all children from Nursey to Year 6 to read twice a week at home, where they have the opportunity to gain an array of rewards, including extra breaktimes and hot chocolates.
All children in school have full access to decodable books, ranging from standards 1-20. Standards 16-20 ensure all higher ability readers can continue to excel and enjoy reading. These books are replenished throughout the year to ensure children are offered new and up-to-date texts.
Phonics Workshop
We held a Phonics workshop in December to inform parents about the order of sound coverage and how we deliver our systematic programme. Parents even got to see a live lesson take place!
Reading Competitions
Reading at home challenge. Well done to our winners!
Poetry Performance
Some of our Year 5 children visited the Grand Theatre today to hear a variety of poetry performances by the incredible Valerie Bloom. Many other schools commented on the boys’ behaviour, of which we’re very proud!
She performed her poetry, shared her experiences of life in Jamaica and taught them words and phrases that she grew up with. They thoroughly enjoyed it and were able to join in with rapping, singing and clapping. The children have received their own copy of her book and were able to ask her questions at the end!
Books for Classrooms
Keeping our class book shelves inviting and engaging with another delivery!
World Book Day
Our School Library
Alice Francis was one of the first ever pupils at Villiers. She thoroughly enjoyed her time here as a student and referred to Villiers throughout her life.
She sadly died 28th October 2020 after a short illness.
Alice’s family have generously donated funds towards new books for our children to enjoy, as she loved reading so much.
We now have a dedicated area for Alice in our library with fantasy books, to remind children to always follow their dreams.
Alice Francis - thank you.
Reading Workshops
We have enjoyed welcoming parents in to share in Reading Workshops with our Reception classes.
Books outside the classroom
We don't just limit our reading books and other reading materials to classrooms. We have a huge range of texts available to read from our reading sheds on both our playgrounds. We also have a book vending machine which dispenses books based on children gaining rewards in class and children can keep these books at home.
