EYFS - Reception
(Early Years Foundation Stage)

In Reception, our primary aim is to welcome children into a warm, friendly, and supportive environment where they can learn, play, and express themselves.

At the beginning of the year, we provide opportunities for children to build confidence in the school routine and form positive relationships with their classmates and the adults who support them throughout the school day.

We offer an Early Years Curriculum designed to foster learning through play and exploration, promoting independence. This curriculum features three Prime areas and four Specific areas of learning:

Prime Areas

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

Communication and Language

Physical Development

Specific Areas

Literacy

Mathematics

Understanding the World

Expressive Arts and Design

During the first weeks of Reception, your child will start learning phonetic sounds using the Little Wandle scheme. By Christmas, they will begin blending sounds to read simple words and sentences. In the spring term, our goal is for your child to use their phonetic knowledge more fluently and confidently in their writing.

Our Mathematics curriculum encompasses Number, Shape, Space, and Measure. Children develop calculation and problem-solving skills through practical activities grounded in everyday experiences. They also learn to use language skills related to shape, capacity, time, money, and measurements.

Our topic work integrates 'Understanding the World' and 'Expressive Arts and Design,' while also reinforcing literacy, numeracy, physical, and social skills. Throughout the year, we plan to engage in many enjoyable activities related to our topic work, including visitors and school trips.

We understand that the transition from Reception to Year 1 can be challenging. Therefore, in the final term, we provide dedicated support to boost children's confidence and ensure they feel encouraged and secure as they prepare for this next step.

Parents are always welcome to contact the school should a concern or matter arise.

If you would like your child to join the Villiers family, please contact our school office.
